From hooker to teacher to

I usually do not blog on matters relating to K thru 12 but I will make an exception this time.

Turns out that a NYC teacher had at one time been a NYC hooker but had successfully transcended from hooker to teacher. Now she has gone public as to her past via the internet. Some want her fired because they hold she is not a good role model for children. From what I know about her she could be viewed as a “good” role model since she made the transition to conventional straight life.

The comments on that link are all in her favour – other than the hypocritical [&/or sexist] male panellists obviously, bar one [woman], when in fact ‘men’ were her ‘customers’ to start with. Leave the past in the past, exactly. Feminists I’m sure would equally condemn her, or conversely, call her a ‘victim’ of the men she willingly serviced.

Just imagine it had been an adult ‘call-boy’ who might even have slept with a mature teenager many years before but was never pursued in the courts for any of it; do you really think the commenters were equally ‘forgiving’, say his past has no bearing on his good teaching today & not call him an immoral ‘whore’ & want him fired? I highly doubt that, or that men would demand him fired, but conversely women no doubt would and call him predator or danger to their children. The fact that they however want to reform the tenure law to see her fired or even charged, or ‘vet’ others’ past to see if they were ‘morally corrupt’ in any form [yet harmed no one], is equally hypocritical [overreaction].

The dankprofessor is Barry M. Dank, an emeritus professor of sociology at California State University, Long Beach, where he taught students and engaged in various forms of professorial dissidence for some 35 years.. In his earlier years, he wrote and pontificated on issues related to homosexuality and specifically on coming out and the development of a gay identity. In 1977 he became famous/infamous for his LA Times article on the anti-homosexual campaign of Anita Bryant. Later he focused on interracial relationships and on student-professor relationships. He is the Founding Editor of SEXUALITY AND CULTURE, published by Springer NYC. During his 35 years as a professor and four years as an in-residence grad student at the University of Wisconsin, he openly engaged in propinquitous (as in propinquity) dating, dating students and having many wonderful friendships with many of his students and their families. During his early years in academia he married the daughter of a professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Wisconsin. Presently he is living in Palm Desert, California. His wife, Henrietta, who he met when she was a student in one of his classes, passed away in 2015. She inspired much of his activism in the area of student professor relationships. She will always be loved and her love and devotion will never be forgotten.
